Permablitzes

On the fourth Sunday of each month we meet at a Permaculture Sydney West (PSW) member’s home or a community garden from 09:30 -13:00. [EXPAND ]

After a brief description of the scope of works for the day, we work together to apply permaculture design principles to help make the property more sustainable and regenerative in Water, Food, Waste, Energy and Community.

A Permablitz may encompass any one or several of the stages in creating more self-reliant living. The scope of work on a Permablitz may include:

Design exercises; soil preparation; setting up grey water or aqua culture systems; clearing non-productive plants; building chicken coops, worm farms, compost bins, vertical gardens, grow beds, wicking beds, mandala gardens, tool /seed/materials storage area; planting out garden beds and more.

We share skills, tools, knowledge, food, laughter and a sense of changing the world, one garden at a time.

You become eligible for a Permablitz at your place by attending at least three Permablitz’s or being actively involved in the running of some aspect of PSW (management committee, specialty team, local group coordination, etc).

NB You need to be a member of Permaculture Sydney West to participate in a permablitz for OHS and insurance purposes. You can join on the day and your whole family will be covered. The cost is less than one book on permaculture and you get a whole year of information, training, education, references, help, friendship and food!

Living Skills Program

Our Living Skills Program operates once a month. Topics are selected throughout the year and are based on suggestions by and the needs of PSW members. [EXPAND ]

Once the monthly invitations go out, participants are chosen on a first come, first serve basis. Group sizes are deliberately kept small, as most sessions occur at the presenter’s home. By and large, our presenters are PSW members who generously share their skills.

Costs are only incurred if materials are needed.

Sessions (ranging from 2 to 4 hours)  may occur during the week or on the weekend, day time or evenings, depending on the presenter’s availability.

The atmosphere is casual, friendly and relaxed. We share knowledge, skills, ideas, food and fellowship.

Sessions so far have included: Pasta Sauce Making & Preserving; Bicycle Maintenance; Let me introduce you to your Sewing Machine; Soap Making & Chemical Free Washing Liquids; Making your own Rocket Stove and Raw Foods.

NB You need to be a member of PSW to participate for OHS and insurance purposes.

Seed Savers

Seedsaving, community gardening and propagation of food plants in season every fourth (4th) Saturday from 9am to 1pm. [EXPAND ]

We meet once a month at Bidjiwong Community Nursery (Rear of Ted Horwood Reserve car park; off Renown Road; opposite the Sports Club, Baulkham Hills) because we enjoy swapping seeds and cuttings as much as we enjoy sharing stories and  the company of other gardeners. This local Seed Networks is an easy way of sharing knowledge & equipment. We like to encourage anyone who wants to save seeds and mingle and share with local growers.

Each meeting offers a variety of activities. Learn about seeds. Bring along that overgrown plant from your garden and learn how to save your seeds over a cuppa and morning tea!

Practise separating, sifting and winnowing. Plant out seed trays. Learn how to propagate and put your potting skills into action.

Take home free seeds and seedlings. Help tend the community garden and share in the harvest!
