Description
Basil ‘East India Clove’ is a perennial plant to 150cm which is also called “tree basil” because of its height. The leaves are often used in curries or as clove substitute. Edible flowers attract pollinating insects. This variety is useful in the garden because the strong aroma deters pests. Basil does not like frost. If frost is a concern, grow it in a large container and move under cover; or cover the plant on nights when frost is expected.
‘East India Clove’ has the potential to cross-pollinate with other basils labelled Ocimum tenuiflorum. If collecting seed, please allow only one of these types to flower at a time. Basil ‘East India Clove’ will not cross-pollinate with most other basils, which are usually Ocimum basilicum; feel free to grow the annual, edible variety of your choice alongside ‘East India Clove’.
