Description
Bean ‘Red Dragon’ snake bean is an annual climbing vine which needs support. It is a popular Asian vegetable used in salads, stir-fry or curries. The green pods, with red tips and red seeds, grow up to 70cm long, which is why it is sometimes called “yard-long bean”. This variety is fast growing and long producing. Best suited to hot weather. Generally, snake beans will not germinate in low soil temperatures.
Red Dragon snake beans are a species of Vigna unguiculata. If growing for seed collection, check the Latin name of the beans you are about to plant: all varieties of Vigna unguiculata have the potential to cross-pollinate with each other. They will, however, not cross-pollinate with green (string) beans or kidney beans (both Phaseolus vulgaris), runner beans, soybeans, adzuki beans or lablab beans, so feel free to grow these other types of beans near your snake bean of choice.
