Description
Bean ‘Zebra’, also known as ‘Molly’s Zebra’, is an annual, snap (or string or green), mid-season, climbing bean variety, growing up to 2 metres tall – it will need support. Pinch out the growing tips to make the vines shorter and bushier. The pencil-thin pods can be eaten young or grown for dried beans. The green pods, up to 12cm long, may be speckled with purple as they mature. The seeds are brown with a striped pattern, hence the name. Pick young pods frequently to extend the harvest. Cut the pods off, do not pull or the plant may be damaged. This variety is hard to get – PSW is fortunate to have it in stock.
Zebra beans are a species of Phaseolus vulgaris, which includes string, green, snap, French (haricot) and kidney beans. If growing for seed collection, check the Latin name of the beans you are about to plant: all varieties of Phaseolus vulgaris have the potential to cross-pollinate with each other. They will, however, not cross-pollinate with snake beans, runner beans, lima beans, soybeans or lablab beans, so feel free to grow these other types of beans near your green bean of choice.
