Description
Celeriac ‘Giant of Prague’ is an heirloom from the 1880s. Celeriac is a root vegetable. The bulb can be grated into salads, or cooked: steam, or use in soups or stews. Celeriac roots can be juiced. Use celeriac leaves as celery. Celeriac is more cold-tolerant than celery. Being a root vegetable, celeriac stores well.
Celeriac is the same species as stem celery and needs the same growing conditions: lots of water, free-draining, compost-rich soil.
Celeriac is a biennial plant which means that it flowers and seeds in the second year. Allow flowers and seeds to stay on the plant until the seed heads are brown. All celery and celeriac varieties can be cross-pollinated with each other. If wanting ‘pure’ seed, ensure only one variety is in flower at a time.
