Description
Black-seeded Chia is an upright annual to 1.5 metres (150cm), 45cm wide. It has either blue or white flowers. Chia is most commonly grown for its edible seed, which can be eaten raw, soaked or cooked. Soaked chia seeds create a gel which is said to be good for hydration, weight loss and improved digestion.
Chia plants are a type of salvia and related to common sage. They thrive in warm, dry Mediterranean climates. If you have clay soil, grow chia in a container or a raised bed.
To save chia seeds, wait until the flowers are completely brown and dry, then cut the plant below the flowering stems and turn upside down in a paper bag to release the seeds.
