Description
Kale ‘Nero di Toscana’ is an Italian heirloom annual to 60cm tall. The dark grey-green leaves have a crumpled appearance. Exposure to frost increases sweetness. Young leaves can be eaten raw. Older leaves should be cooked. This is a good variety for kale chips. Also known as ‘Cavalo di Nero’, ‘Tuscan’ kale, ‘Tuscan Black’ kale or dinosaur kale.
Kale varieties can cross-pollinate with some other varieties of kale, and other Brassica oleracea plants, such as broccoli, cabbage, collards, and kohlrabi. If growing for seed production, allow only one variety to go to flower at a time.
Like all brassicas, kale needs protection from cabbage butterflies and moths, and cabbage aphids.
