Description
Leek ‘Autumn Giant’ is a fast-growing, aromatic vegetable. It has long thick stems, up to 10cm in diameter, with little to no bulb. Harvesting can begin when stems are 2cm in diameter. Thicker stems can be fibrous but are softened when cooked in soups, stews or casseroles. This variety can be used raw if finely sliced. Keep well-watered while growing.
Leeks store for long periods in the fridge or freezer; alternatively, they can be left in the ground through winter.
Leeks are cold tolerant down to -4°C.
Leeks are biennial, they produce seed in the second year. All leeks can be cross-pollinated with each other. If growing more than one variety for seed, allow only one variety to produce seed at a time; cut the growing scape out of the other varieties until the head has formed on the first.
