Description
Melon ‘Sakata’ originated in Japan. The vine produces small, round melons up to 10cm in diameter. The grey-green skin turns yellow when ripe. This melon is highly fragrant. The flesh is pale green, crisp and crunchy — more like an apple than the traditional softness of melons. The flavour is very sweet and the skin is edible.
Sakata melons can cross-pollinate with other Cucumis melo species, which includes melons like rockmelon, honeydew, and ‘Santa Claus’. Cucumis melo cannot easily be crossed with watermelon (except in a laboratory).
