Description
Melon ‘Santa Claus’ is an heirloom from Spain. The oval-shaped fruit grows up to 30cm long, and has a green-striped rind, with pale green flesh. The flavour is mild and sweet, similar to honeydew or rockmelon. The fruits can be stored for long periods. This melon is sometimes called ‘Christmas Melon’. In its native Spain it is called ‘Piel de Sapo’ (literally “toad skin” or “frog skin”). This variety of melon is sold in supermarkets as ‘Melón de Sapo’.
Santa Claus melons can cross-pollinate with other Cucumis melo species, which includes melons like rockmelon, honeydew, and ‘Sakata’. Cucumis melo cannot easily be crossed with watermelon (except in a laboratory).
