Description
Pumpkin ‘Jap’ is a popular variety in Australia yet its name remains an enigma; some say the name means “just another pumpkin”, others that it is short for “Japanese pumpkin”. Some say it is the same as ‘Kent’ pumpkin, yet others say that it is Kabocha squash.
This variety produces medium-sized fruit averaging around 5kg. The skin is grey-green with yellow patches. The flesh is firm and orange-yellow. This variety takes longer than others to come to maturity. It is tolerant of poor soils.
This variety of pumpkin will cross-pollinate with any other variety of Cucurbita moschata, including some squash and zucchini, but not with pumpkins of the species C. pepo or C. maxima. If you are collecting seeds and concerned about cross-pollination, please refer to the Latin name of squash, pumpkin and/or zucchini plants before growing.
