Description
Pumpkin ‘Kent’ is a frost‑tender, annual vine that spreads widely. It can also grow on a trellis to save space and improve airflow. Fruit will need support if grown this way. These pumpkins are round but slightly flattened and usually weigh 3–5 kg. Their skin is dark green with lighter speckling. Inside, the flesh is orange, firm, sweet, and smooth. This variety is excellent for roasting, soups, and baking.
Pumpkin plants are gross feeders. They need rich, well‑drained soil, full sun, steady moisture, and plenty of room. Harvest when the vine starts to die back and the stem turns brown. Leave a short ‘handle’ on the fruit to help it store well.
In Australia, ‘Kent’ and ‘Jap’ pumpkins are often treated as the same type, although there are small differences between the strains.
‘Kent’ pumpkins are a variety of Cucurbita moschata. They cross pollinate with other Cucurbita moschata pumpkins. They do not cross with Cucurbita maxima or Cucurbita pepo. If saving seed, grow only one variety of each type.
