Description
Rockmelon ‘Hales Best’ is an old heirloom variety. The fruit is large, about 15cm across, and up to 1.5–2.5kg. The skin is highly textured. The flesh is orange and very sweet. ‘Hales Best’ tolerates dry conditions and is more resistant to mildew than some other varieties.
Vines can be trained to grow vertically, saving space and increasing airflow. Support fruit in nets.
All varieties of rockmelon can cross-pollinate with other Cucumis melo varieties, which includes melons like honeydew and ‘Santa Claus’. Rockmelons cannot easily be crossed with watermelon (except in a laboratory).
