Spring is here!!

Spring is coming!? Time to prepare the garden beds and plant seeds where they can be protected. 27 Different types of tomatoes were planted today. For other seeds we need to be a little more patient until the ground warms up. (rockmelon, corn, sunflowers and cucumbers).

We had 32 people attend Seed Savers including 4 children and three families from the recent GOOF course run by Greg and Vera.

Jam Melon was our hands on, messy fun at seed savers- lovely big seeds.

After two months of not planting any seeds over winter we sowed 88 varieties of seeds, transplanted 4, propagated black fig, white fig, peppermint and fruit sage. 10 types of seeds were given to members to direct plant.

The varieties of seeds we planted were: Allheal, Alyssum snow cloth, 2 types of Amaranth, artichoke, 4 types of basil, 3 types of beetroot, bittermelon, borage, 3 types of cabbage, calendula, 3 types of capscicum, chard, chicory, 4 types of chilli, chives, coriander, cosmos, cress, custard apple, dill, 2 types of eggplant, hyssop, kurrajong tree, leek, lemongrass, 6 types of lettuce, meadowsweet, mesculan, nasturtium, nigella, okra, oregano, pigeon pea, 2 types of poppy, salsify, shallots, silverbeet, soapwort, sunflower, 27 types of tomatoes, and yam bean.

As usual we enjoyed a multicultural feast for morning tea. Afterwards we harvested seeds. 83 types of seeds were donated back today! Many thanks to all the people who patiently sacrificed a plant and saved seeds for everyone else to enjoy next season. The seeds were cleaned from the plants and packaged up to sell at the meetings as well as a selection of seedlings.

Seed Savers meets 9am-1pm on the 4th Saturday of each month at Bidjiwong Community Nursery, Baulkham Hills. All welcome, with free seedlings to take home each month. You are welcome to attend 1 meeting to see if this group suits you, if so you can become a single member for $25, or family member for $30 a year. Becoming a member is for the purpose of insurance cover and venue hire when you do any activities with us. Children from 6 years are welcome at Seed Savers.

Happy Gardening!
