Description
Collard ‘Morris Heading’ was developed in 1919 in Carolina, USA. It is one of several types of “tree collards”. It is a compact bush with blue-green, slightly crumpled leaves with light green veins. The plants are heat and cold tolerant. The flavour of the leaves sweetens with frost. Harvest outside leaves as needed.
Like all brassicas, collards are gross feeders. Grow in soil with high organic matter and feed fortnightly with a liquid organic fertiliser.
Collards are the same species as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and kohlrabi so they may cross-pollinate. Seeds are collected from the small pods that develop after the plant has gone to flower, usually in the second year. Allow the pods to turn brown and dry on the plant. Cover with an organza or paper bag to stop seeds spreading throughout the garden.
