Description
Coneflower, also known as ‘Echinacea’, is a pretty ornamental plant but is best known traditionally as a medicinal herb. Growing up to 100cm tall, this perennial plant has pink-purple flowers which attract beneficial insects to the garden. The name comes from the shape of the flowers: as the flower matures, the petals grow downwards and the distinctive cone-shaped centre begins to form.
To collect seed, allow the spiky balls to completely dry while still attached to the plant. To prevent injury, cut long stems, hang upside-down in a paper bag and allow seed to fall out naturally.
