Description
Fennel ‘Florence’ is a biennial plant up to 1.5 metres, usually grown as an annual. The base of the stem swells and is often referred to as a ‘bulb’. The bulb is eaten as a vegetable, raw or cooked. Raw fennel has a stronger anise (licorice) flavour; cooking makes the taste much milder. The leaves are used to add a subtle aniseed flavour to a dish, or simply as a garnish. The seeds can be used as a spice. Fennel plants are susceptible to mildew. Seeds are produced in the second year.
