Description
Lettuce ‘Regina di Maggio’, literally, ‘Queen of May’, is an Italian heirloom. It is a butterhead-type of lettuce, which means it forms a loose head. Butterhead lettuce varieties are so called because of the soft ‘buttery’ texture of the leaves, not because of their taste. ‘Regina di Maggio’ has green leaves with red-tinged edges. Like most butterhead types, this variety prefers spring and autumn growing seasons. Succession sow every three weeks to increase harvest length.
All varieties of lettuce, whether looseleaf, butterhead, cos, Romaine, or iceberg can be easily cross-pollinated with each other. If growing more than one variety for seed, the best strategy is to allow only one variety to be in flower at a time.
