Description
Miners’ Lettuce is an annual plant to 30cm, with succulent, circular leaves and a mild, fresh flavour. The stems are crisp, balancing the soft, tender leaves. The plants are high in Vitamin C. Miners’ lettuce is sometimes called “winter purslane”. This plant tolerates poor soil and can grow well even in shade. Miners’ Lettuce can become weedy because it self-seeds readily. Historically, this plant was used by miners as a lettuce substitute and helped prevent scurvy in nomadic populations.
