Description

Viola ‘Helen Mount’ is also called ‘hearts-ease’. Violas have kidney-shaped, usually green, leaves and open flowers, consisting of five petals, with the lowest being the largest. The open flowers attract beneficial insects into the garden. These are soft plants, so do best in part-shade, well-drained, moist soil. Violas can be grown in containers. Best planted en masse for a stunning display. The plants tend to sprawl as they get older. The tiny seeds are easily scattered and many gardeners find these plants self-seeding freely in their gardens. However, they are easy to remove and, therefore, not invasive.
The flowers are edible and can be used fresh in salads. Flowers can also be dipped or painted with egg-white and coated with castor sugar to decorate cakes and desserts.
