Description
Alyssum ‘Mountain Gold’, also known as ‘Basket of Gold’ or ‘Berggold’, is a short-lived, semi-hardy, perennial groundcover to 15cm with golden-yellow flowers which attract pollinators and other beneficial insects into the garden. The flowers are edible with a sweet yet peppery taste which goes well in salads. ‘Mountain Gold’ can be grown in containers. This variety tolerates poor soil and will grow in rockeries, along edges, or in that narrow space along the driveway. It is relatively drought tolerant (western Sydney heat can sometimes knock out even the hardiest plants).
This plant, Aurinia saxatilis, will not cross-pollinate with true alyssum species, Lobularia maritima, such as ‘Cameo Mix’, ‘Snowcloth’ or ‘Violet Queen’.
