Description
Bean ‘Adzuki’ is an annual, bush bean from Japan. The green pods are about 10cm long. The beans can be eaten fresh or dried. This variety is very nutritious; the dried beans have a pleasant, nutty flavour. Pick fresh beans often to prolong the harvest. Cut the bean, do not pull or the plant may be damaged. For dried beans, leave the pods on the plant for as long as possible until they are completely dry and rattle when shaken.
Adzuki beans are the species Vigna angularis. If growing for seed collection, check the Latin name of the beans you are about to plant: They will not cross-pollinate with the common green bean Phaseolus vulgaris, kidney beans, snake beans, runner beans, lima beans, soybeans or lablab beans, so feel free to grow these other types of beans near your adzuki bean of choice.
