Description
This variety of Canna is a dwarf, ornamental plant which can grow up to 1.2 metres tall, with a width of about 60–90cm. The flowers are bright red and held on upright, unbranched stalks. The leaves are large, smooth and deeply veined. Based on flower, leaf and seed pod characteristics, this plant is likely to be the species-type Canna, *Canna coccinea*, or a close relative. Canna plants bloom in summer and/or autumn. These plants can be used to shade chicken coops in summer; our hens love eating the young leaves. When planted densely, Canna can form a good windbreak. Canna grows best in damp soil and is often seen growing over septic tanks near older houses in rural areas.
Cannas can be cross‑pollinated with other varieties. Therefore, the seed collected from one plant may not produce flowers of the same colour or patterning as the mother plant.
