Description
Choi Sum is a fast-growing Chinese vegetable with long stalks, green leaves and yellow flowers. Leaves can be harvested in as little as 40 days after sowing. Use in stir fry, stews or steamed. Stems, leaves and flowers are edible, so harvest the whole plant when it goes to flower (unless intending to collect seeds).
Also spelt Choi San, Choi Sum or Choy San.
Choi Sum can cross-pollinate with other Brassica chinensis plants, such as Hon Tsai Tai (purple choy san). If growing for seed production, allow only one variety to go to flower at a time.
Like all brassicas, Choi Sum needs protection from cabbage butterflies and moths, and cabbage aphids.
