Rue is a perennial, evergreen, upright plant to 50cm. It will grow in part-shade. The bluish-green leaves have an aromatic, orange-like scent when lightly brushed; strong, musky scent when crushed. The leaves can be used as an insect repellent. The small yellow flowers have very little scent. Prune the plant after flowering.
Rue is edible but has gone out of fashion due to the bitter flavour.
