Description

Silverbeet ‘Fordhook Giant’ is a popular variety of this leaf vegetable, often called ‘spinach’. The plants grow up to 60cm, producing large, dark-green, crinkled leaves with white stems. To prolong the harvest season, pick outer leaves rather than cutting the whole plant.
Botanically, silverbeet is the same plant as chard. Although both are often called ‘spinach’, neither is related to true spinach.
Silverbeet, like chard, is the same species as beetroot; all can cross-pollinate. Being biennial, the seeds are not produced until the second year.
