Description
Turnip ‘Gold Ball’ is a very old heirloom variety, found in France in mid 1800s. The root has golden skin. The colour of the flesh may vary according to soil type but, generally, it is a golden-yellow colour, with a sweet and mild flavour. Roots to 10cm. Good in salad, soups, stews or pickles. Best eaten young.
Turnips can cross-pollinate each other, and other Brassica rapa plants, such as Asian vegetables (Bok Choi, Pak Choi, Tatsoi) and mustards grown for edible leaves.
Like all brassicas, turnips need protection from cabbage butterflies and moths, and cabbage aphids.
