Description
Turnip ‘Snowball’ is a Japanese heirloom first introduced in 1880s. The plant has green leaves and white, golf-ball-sized roots. The flesh is sweet, juicy and mild. Roots are best when harvested young, around 9cm. Leaves can be eaten raw or cooked.
Turnips can cross-pollinate each other, and other Brassica rapa plants, such as Asian vegetables (Bok Choi, Pak Choi, Tatsoi) and mustards grown for edible leaves.
Like all brassicas, turnips need protection from cabbage butterflies and moths, and cabbage aphids.
