Description
Swede ‘Champion Purple Top’ is a hardy plant. The cream-coloured roots have purple tops. Their excellent flavour is made sweeter by frost. Use in stews, soups or as a roast vegetable. Add to pumpkin and potato as mash. The roots store well.
Although swedes look like turnips, they are not the same species and will not cross-pollinate. You can plant a variety of each, side by side, and collect the seed without worry. However, all swedes can cross-pollinate with each other. Swedes are biennial, meaning they produce seeds in the second year.
Interesting fact: Swedes, called ‘rutabaga’ in USA, are the same species as canola!
