Description
Cape Gooseberry is also known as ‘Ground Cherry’. It is a frost tender, sprawling perennial to 100cm tall; best grown in a ‘cage’, tied onto a trellis or in its own bed. The mature, sweet, sometimes slightly tart, juicy fruit are encased in a papery covering which is removed before eating. This is a semi-tropical plant that produces fruit in late summer, autumn and, sometimes, into winter.
Cape Gooseberry and Tomatillo plants can be decimated quickly by the Three-lined Potato Beetle. Monitor regularly and remove any beetles or larvae before the infestation becomes unmanageable.
